Arnulfo Mendoza has redefined the boundaries of contemporary Zapotec pedal loom weaving, combining vibrant hand-dyed silk and wool, with gold and silver in dazzling designs of astounding complexity. His present work reflects over a decade of design development inspired by the classic 19th century southern Mexican sarape.
Each weaving is an original work of art. Arnulfo personally hand-dyes every yarn, individually designs each tapestry and hand weaves, with only a few talented weavers, the singular creations here on exhibit.
While this ongoing series of rug designs gives Mendoza a basis in which to explore his own creativity, it is well documented the phenomenal influence his work has had on countless Teotitlán weavers.
