The school of Oaxacan painting emerged in the 1970’s from a confluence of primarily young artists from rural communities. Their world of reference was filled with rich folklore, strong beliefs in the spirit world and animal-spirit transformation known as nauhalismo. Gabriel Garcia Marquez brought Latin America’s magical realism to the written page and the artists of Oaxaca brought this same genre to their paintings and prints.
Many of these young artists were inspired by Francisco Toledo who, through the early and continued success of his highly original visual language, validated the motifs of native Oaxacan culture: iguanas, petates (woven mats) xoloesquintles (native dogs), scorpions and burros to name a few.
Toledo’s predecessor, Rufino Tamayo, chose Mexico’s noble pre-Hispanic art to inspire his visual expression of place and belonging.
